CURE Childhood Cancer
About CURE Childhood Cancer
When CURE was founded in 1975, the survival rates for children diagnosed with cancer were very low. With focused and collaborative research, those rates have steadily risen to above 80%. However, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children, and studies show that more than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have significant health issues by the time they are 45 years old.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) was established to spearhead the global fight against cancer and has been a driving force behind scientific progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. However, despite its achievements, children with cancer have been left behind in terms of research funding. As shocking as it may seem, only 4% of the NCI’s research budget is dedicated to childhood cancers, resulting in a lack of progress in developing effective treatments for children with cancer. As a result, children with cancer are often left with outdated treatment options that have not advanced at the same rate as those for adults. CURE is a leading pediatric cancer charity that exists to fill that gap.
Our Mission
CURE is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research while supporting patients and their families.
Our Vision
CURE believes that childhood cancer can be cured in our lifetime.
Serious Funding for Serious Research
Childhood cancer research is the key to unlocking breakthroughs that will save the lives of children diagnosed with cancer. Not only will research help children survive their diagnosis, but by developing safer and less toxic treatments, it will also help children who do survive to experience fewer harmful side effects and live their lives to the fullest. In the past twelve years, CURE has invested $43 million in innovative research at leading pediatric cancer research institutions across the nation.
Our research priorities are two-fold. First, we prioritize research that will lead to more effective treatments for children within two to three years. We also prioritize research aimed at solving recurrent and hard-to-treat cancers for which no effective treatment exists. We are a leader in advancing precision medicine, a treatment targeted at tumor-driving genes, which is yielding significant results for children with recurrent and hard-to-treat cancers.
Until there is a cure, there’s CURE.
The second part of our mission is to support families devastated by a childhood cancer diagnosis through programs designed to meet a family’s emotional, practical, and financial needs quickly and appropriately. CURE is in the hospitals serving meals several days a week, we provide emergency financial support to ease the burden of families in the fight, and we offer professional counseling to patients and family members. We also offer bereavement support for families who must deal with unimaginable loss.
These are only a few of the ways we, as a pediatric cancer charity, serve patients and their families. CURE’s goal of being an ever-present help to families in crisis encompasses dozens of services designed to lighten the load of the families and make sure they know they aren’t alone. CURE’s unwavering support is available from diagnosis until we are no longer needed.
Support for Families Fighting Cancer
Family: A group of people who genuinely trust, care about, and look out for each other. At CURE, we stand united with every family facing the challenges of pediatric cancer. Your family becomes part of a larger family, the CURE family, and our support for families with cancer never wavers.
Our Research
Every year, more than 17,000 children in the United States and 400,000 worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. While research has brought the overall survival rate above 80%, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children. Treatments for many pediatric cancers are decades old, and even when a child does survive, they are often forced to deal with debilitating side effects long after they are cancer-free.
At CURE, our mission is to conquer childhood cancer by funding targeted research that will save lives and give survivors their best quality of life. Our research priorities are two-fold. First, we prioritize research that will lead to more effective treatments for children within two to three years. We also prioritize research aimed at solving recurrent and hard-to-treat cancers for which no effective treatment exists.
Over the past twelve years, we have invested more than $43 million in innovative research, resulting in important discoveries and treatment options. We are a leader in advancing precision medicine for children, investing $12 million in personalized cancer medicine initiatives over the last six years. Additionally, CURE invests more than $5 million annually in specific research efforts at top pediatric institutions nationwide.
CURE Family Support
Frequently, children with cancer have lengthy outpatient clinic visits or hospital stays, and CURE helps by providing several things for patient families. If you are looking to support children and families affected by childhood cancer, there are many ways you can assist families currently in treatment. From meal and snack bags to toiletry bags, no-sew blankets, and more, our CURE Family Support Programs offer immediate assistance. We also provide birthday bags for children celebrating a birthday while in the hospital and caregiver respite kits. Should you be interested in these, suggested items will be sent to interested volunteers.
This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for businesses, school groups, or other organizations to get involved and benefit childhood cancer research and family support.
