New York Edge
New York Edge bridges the opportunity gap faced by students in underinvested communities by strengthening academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life.
We are a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of school-based afterschool programs in New York City and the metropolitan region. We impact nearly 25,000 students from over 100 sites in grades K-12 typically in underserved neighborhoods. Programs run before or after the school day, year-round (including Saturdays, over the summer, and holiday periods).
The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life.
Operating between three and five days each week for 36 weeks during the school year in most programs, our flagship out-of-school time Champions Clubs through pathways to success, we offer combined academic enrichment curricula including: literacy, STEAM, leadership, High School Today College Tomorrow (HSTCT) and Middle School Today High School Tomorrow (MSTHST) with sports and wellness, music, visual and performing arts opportunities and trips to educational and cultural institutions.
Academics
The underlying thread for all New York Edge programs is the development of our student’s social-emotional skills development through a built-in approach to character development in all aspects of our program.
Sports & Wellness
Sports and Wellness is dedicated to improving both physical and nutrition literacy amongst underserved youth in New York City, through the implementation of sports, wellness and fitness programs.
The Arts
Arts educators are provided with ongoing professional development in an effort to stimulate student interest in the different genres our students would be most interested in learning.
College and Career
Pathways to Success is a key component of New York Edge’s work to motivate and support our students to succeed academically, maintain healthy and active lifestyles, gain social-emotional and leadership skills, and transition successfully from middle school and high school to college, and beyond.
Summer Camp
New York Edge’s Summer Camps provide enriching, high-quality sports, arts, and academic programming to students throughout NYC and Mount Vernon.
New York Edge’s Student Book Publishing Initiative presents an opportunity to help students develop and reinforce a joy of storytelling and creative expression that will serve them throughout their school years and beyond. Students in the program have the rewarding experience of becoming published authors while gaining exposure to leaders in the publishing industry.
Working in partnership with an award-winning children’s book author focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the genre, students in our after school program learn about the creative writing process, write their own stories and have them illustrated by professional artists. The program results in a tangible final product–a book that is for sale wherever books are sold–while also helping students better understand the science of storytelling, writing, art, and design. Additionally, income generated from book sales is reinvested in the Student Publishing Initiative. Currently, over 12 New York Edge sites have participated in this program!
