Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. We amplify the power of our millions of members and supporters to defend everyone’s right to a healthy world.
The Challenge
Today, there are serious challenges ahead: a warming climate, unprecedented levels of pollution, and powerful special interests undermining basic protections. There’s no time to waste in coming together for new solutions—which is why the Sierra Club is bringing people together to build the most powerful and effective environmental movement the world has ever seen.
How We Do It
We’ve built a national community of volunteers, advocates, and grassroots activists who show up when and where it counts. From securing protection for 439 parks and monuments, to winning passage of the Clean Air and Endangered Species Acts, to putting over 281 coal plants on the path to replacement with clean energy, to securing the right of every kid in America to visit a national park, we have an unmatched record of success and impact.
A Diverse Coalition
We work with other partner organizations, nonprofits, and campaigns to build a diverse, inclusive movement that represents today’s American public. We know that environmental issues can’t be separated from social justice—because we all breathe the same air and share the same land. The Sierra Club also works with and supports companies that know strong values are a part of smart business.
Enjoying the Outdoors
And we help people enjoy the earth we’re protecting. Each year, Sierra Club volunteers lead over 15,000 trips annually, from extended trips across the world to afternoon hikes not far from home.
Our Roots
The Sierra Club’s first members, including John Muir, were originally focused on the conservation of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Since then, the Sierra Club has evolved into an organization that works to advance climate solutions and ensure everyone has access to clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment.
Protecting our home
From city parks to forests of redwoods, from the air we breathe to the water we drink, everyone depends on a vibrant and healthy world.
Climate & Energy
The climate crisis is here
Every day brings more news about sea-level rise and climate-fueled disasters. Our task is clear and urgent: We must fight for each other—and the only planet we call home.
But together we can move beyond coal
Over 125 years of fighting have taught us that every voice, every action, matters. Now, more than ever before, grassroots efforts—whether in the city council chambers or the streets—will determine our future.
Fighting Oil and Gas
We are taking on polluting corporations to protect our health, our climate, and the places we love from the reckless expansion of dirty, dangerous fossil fuels.
From drilling to burning and all along the way, fossil fuels produce toxic chemicals and climate-polluting emissions. They harm our health, pollute our air and water, and drive the climate crisis. Sierra Club and our allies across the country are fighting back against the corporations rushing to profit off the exploitation of our communities. We are shining a light on polluters’ lies and turning the tide against the industry’s push to build and expand oil and gas.
Clean Transportation
Transportation is a major source of air pollution and has the largest, fastest-growing climate emissions in the US. We can tackle the climate crisis and clean up our air by shifting to pollution-free vehicles, accessible public transit, and making our communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly. No matter their zip code, race, income level, age, or any other factor people should be able to rely on clean and safe transportation. Join the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign in making that vision a reality!
Electric Vehicles
The Sierra Club is working to accomplish a widespread shift to plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) that rely on little to no oil at all. EVs are much cleaner than conventional vehicles today, even accounting for the emissions from electricity sources.
People & Justice
Peoples Climate Movement: Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice
Because environmental injustice is real
Everyone deserves clean water and breathable air—but for many communities access to those basic necessities is compromised by systemic racism and discrimination. We partner with groups across the country on projects like protecting sacred Indigenous sites and rebuilding communities devastated by climate and natural disasters.
And our future depends on gender equity
The effects of climate disruption aren’t gender neutral, and neither are the solutions. We advocate for gender equity so that everyone can speak their truth, play a role, and become leaders in solving the world’s climate crisis.
Lands, Air, Water & Wildlife
We must protect 30% of lands by 2030
Protecting wild places will keep drilling and logging from polluting the air and water, sequester carbon, provide protection from extreme weather, protect homes for wildlife, promote outdoor economies and jobs, and enhance opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors together.
Clean Vehicle Programs: State Tracker
Momentum is building! Several states across the country are moving forward with programs to deliver cleaner air to their residents and clean up polluting cars and trucks, including large pickup trucks, delivery trucks, and semi-trucks.
Land Use & Walking/Biking
Sierra Club chapters nationwide are working with cities, regions, states, and transit agencies to increase investment in biking, pedestrian, and public transit programs. Together, we can pass transportation policies that encourage smart growth and discourage sprawl to allow people to sustainably access jobs, housing, education, healthcare, nature, and community.
