Wildlife Conservation Society
WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY
WCS’s goal is to conserve the world’s largest wild places in 14 priority regions, habitat for around 50% of the world’s biodiversity and a wide range of charismatic megafauna.
The challenges are greater than ever, but with the focus, dedication, and passion of a committed staff—combined with a unique mixture of field, zoo, and aquarium expertise—WCS will continue to set the bar for science, conservation action, and education that has driven our success in protecting wildlife and wild places for over a century. We hold ourselves to the highest standards, adhering to core values of respect, accountability and transparency, innovation, diversity and inclusion, collaboration, and integrity.
OUR MISSION
WCS saves wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature.
OUR VISION
WCS envisions a world where wildlife thrives in healthy lands and seas, valued by societies that embrace and benefit from the diversity and integrity of life on earth.
Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, the Wildlife Conservation Society was one of the first conservation organizations in the U.S. The Society began with a clear mandate: Advance wildlife conservation, promote the study of zoology, and create a first-class zoo. In fact we have five: the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and New York Aquarium.
EXHIBITS AND CONSERVATION
WCS’s staff of field and zoo experts work together in the service of a single mission: to save wildlife and wild places. As our vets, curators, and keepers care for the animals in our four zoos and aquarium in New York, they share their insights with scientists working in the field to save wildlife. Field staff report back their observations of animal behavior and needs in nature, which in turn bolsters animal wellbeing in the parks.
We Stand for Wildlife®
Our goal is to conserve the world’s largest wild places in 14 priority regions, habitat for around 50% of the world’s biodiversity and a wide range of charismatic megafauna.
WCS uses science to discover and understand the natural world. This knowledge helps us engage and inspire decision-makers, communities, and millions of supporters to take action with us to protect the wildlife and wild places we all care about.
SAVING WILDLIFE
WCS scientists study what wildlife species need to thrive. With this knowledge we invest in abating threats to wildlife within their most important strongholds and the corridors that connect them. We target large, iconic, wide-ranging species because of their intrinsic value and because they are vital to ecosystem health. By saving them, we protect all other biodiversity that shelters under their conservation canopy.
SAVING WILD PLACES
Over the past century, WCS has established long-term conservation presence in the last wild places across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, built strong and trusting partnerships, and acquired a depth of knowledge that ensures effective conservation action. We protect these last wild places because they are intact, biodiverse, most resilient to climate change, and bastions for large, iconic wildlife species.
