Girls Inc.
Girls Inc. is the longest-running girls’ leadership program. Girls Inc. is the preeminent girls’ leadership organization equipping girls to reach their full potential.
Working with and on behalf of girls for 160 years has given us unparalleled knowledge and expertise. The Girls Inc. Experience changes the trajectory of girls’ lives and prepares them for lifelong success.
Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War.
Across the decades, we adapted to meet the specific environmental challenges facing girls and young women, always working in partnership with schools and communities, and guided by our founders’ fundamental belief in the inherent potential of each girl. Woven into those early girls’ clubs are the same core values of Girls Inc. today: the importance of creating a safe gathering place for girls to learn and to share in a sisterhood and a strong premise that each girl can develop her own capacities, self- confidence, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.
Girls Inc. has served millions of girls across the United States and Canada. Our participants are equipped with the skills to lead and create positive change in their communities.

Powerful Outcomes for Powerful Girls
Our outcomes demonstrate that with the right opportunities to grow and learn, girls’ realities are transformed. We equip girls to disrupt the status quo and ensure they have equal opportunities to take their places as the leaders they are.
The Girls Inc. Experience has positive and lasting effects for the girls who participate.
“In a rigorous comparison study, we found that girls who participate in the Girls Inc. Experience demonstrated improved academic performance, school-related behaviors, physical activity, and leadership outcomes.“ – Dr. Deborah Moroney, Managing Director of the American Institutes for Research
PROJECT ACCELERATE
Project Accelerate awarded $10M as part of Equality Can’t Wait challenge.
EQUALITY CAN’T WAIT
Girls Inc. Project Accelerate is a groundbreaking venture that partners with Equality Can’t Wait to ensure that workplace equality is achieved not over centuries, but now.
The Equality Can’t Wait Challenge – hosted by Pivotal Ventures, MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett, and Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies – called for bold ideas that would expand women’s power and influence in the U.S. by 2030.
Building on Girls Inc.’s evidence-based programming, Project Accelerate addresses inequality in the workplace, particularly the absence of women of color in positions of influence and leadership. The program will accelerate young women’s trajectories through college and career entry, leveraging partnerships with corporations and social impact organizations to ensure both their preparation and their access to positions of influence. Project Accelerate is a direct response to girls asking for support from a trusted source, Girls Inc., as they faced transitions and situations that challenged even the best prepared.
ADVOCACY & EDUCATION
Girls Inc. works with and for girls to advocate for policies to overcome the social and systemic barriers that threaten their ability to succeed.
Together, we advocate especially for the needs of girls from low-income communities and those who may face discrimination because of their gender, race, religion, ethnicity, immigration status, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and gender identity.
We Help Create a Culture of Excellence Where Girls Thrive.
Each of our affiliates operates independently, and our role at National is to ensure that these local organizations have access to three key resources that allow them to make direct service a priority.
Support to recruit, develop, and retain the excellent people—both employees and volunteers—who are the heart of the Girls Inc. Experience.
Research-based and evidence-based programming and facilitator and mentor training to ensure the teams who support the girls reflect the population we serve, and girls have the mentors they need to follow their dreams.
Thought partnership and technical assistance to support the consistent excellence of our affiliates.
If we all do our part, the Girls Inc. Experience comes to life throughout our network of affiliates. They have the support they need to recruit and retain trained mentors to serve as program facilitators; and each affiliate, urban or rural, large or small, can leverage the strong reputation of the entire network and make the most of your local involvement, as they support local schools and communities.
INVESTING IN A MORE EQUITABLE FUTURE
We invite you to become a partner and help our organization provide girls with the tools they need to be strong, smart and bold in anything they set their minds to.
Girls Inc. relies on external funding to support our network of affiliates with training, curriculum and programming that help girls build the knowledge, skills and confidence to be leaders and change the world.
