The New York Community Trust
As New York’s community foundation, The New York Community Trust fosters and engages in enduring and innovative philanthropy.
The New York Community Trust connects past, present, and future generous New Yorkers with vital nonprofits working to make a healthy, equitable, and thriving community for all.
The New York Community Trust strives to promote equitable and thriving communities throughout New York City, Long Island, and Westchester.
From the creation of the country’s first donor-advised fund to our vital role in the region’s response to the AIDS crisis, September 11th, and COVID-19, The Trust has always been a pioneer, innovator, and leader in offering donors effective ways to empower and champion nonprofits. Through New York’s greatest triumphs and challenges, we’ll continue to be here—a throughline from past to future, and a beating heart for our beloved region forever.
We are a civic grantmaking organization committed to enhancing the well-being of residents in New York City and its surrounding areas. We unite individuals, families, foundations, and enterprises to foster a more inclusive community and bolster impactful nonprofits that make a significant difference. We harness expertise, innovation, and assets to tackle the most pressing challenges, striving to ensure meaningful prospects and an improved quality of life for all New Yorkers, now and in the future.
Since 1924, the New York Community Trust has contributed to making our region a more vibrant place for everyone: Young and elderly, recent arrivals and long-time inhabitants.
Our efforts are sustained by the enduring benevolence of donors—ranging from educators and cab drivers to Rockefellers. Nearly a century after our establishment, The Trust continues to deliver a distinctive brand of philanthropy that is steadfast, forward-thinking, and results-driven.
Causes
From education and the arts to healthcare and the environment, we’ll help you make a difference for the causes you care about. You also can support areas not listed below. Let us help you find the way to give that works best for you.
Philanthropic Advising
Individuals, families, foundations, and corporations use The Trust to amplify their giving. Our deep bench of local experts and commitment to meeting donors’ needs enables us to efficiently identify groups that align with donors’ values and objectives.
Individuals & Families
No matter how you want to make an impact, we can help you turn a variety of assets into a force for good. Leverage the unrivalled local expertise of our program team to support your grantmaking through grant recommendations, nonprofit site visits, and more.
By leveraging our knowledge of our local community and conducting research on the issues you care about, we can recommend effective nonprofits whose work aligns with your goals. Then together, we’ll shape a giving plan.
We can work with you and your family members to create short- and long-term grantmaking strategies, including by facilitating planning retreats and helping family members, donors, and advisors reach consensus on a grant strategy.
We can help introduce you to nonprofit leaders, arrange site visits to programs, and facilitate meetings with nonprofit grantees.
The Trust can run a full-service grantmaking program for you. Our staff can issue requests for proposals, identify and select nonprofits, conduct due diligence and arrange site visits, administer the grants and associated paperwork, monitor and evaluate the impact of the work, and create summary reports for your foundation.
Private Foundations
The Trust can amplify and expand your grantmaking without hiring staff. We manage full-service grantmaking programs for a variety of family and private foundations. Our staff can identify nonprofits; vet them and conduct site visits; administer the grants process; and monitor and evaluate the impact of the work for your foundation.
Corporations
Many corporations want to give charitably in a way that elevates their brand and echoes their core values. The Trust helps corporations develop a giving strategy, bolster their presence in local communities, and make grants that drive positive change in their communities.
Government
We have decades of experience conceiving grantmaking programs and driving change for a variety of municipal and state government entities. We help governments issue targeted requests for proposals and develop appropriate due diligence processes. We also design systems to monitor and evaluate the impact of grants.
Scholarships
With the exception of our Armenian Scholarships, applications for our scholarships are available by invitation only. The charitable funds that support these awards have very specific purposes, schools, or communities designated by the generous donors who created them.
