Hospice Austin
As the first hospice in Central Texas, Hospice Austin has end-of-life care expertise that only decades of experience can teach. And as Austin’s only nonprofit hospice, we provide care to any person who needs us, regardless of age, diagnosis, or ability to pay. All of our resources go toward services that benefit each patient and family, not to owners or investors.
Last year, Hospice Austin provided more than $1.8 million in care beyond what was reimbursed by insurance. Thanks to the generous financial support from the Central Texas community, we are able to welcome those who are uninsured or whose treatment is more expensive than what other hospices are willing to provide. We value compassion, comfort and respect, and work tirelessly to honor the unique needs and personal dignity of each person we serve.
The first hospice in Central Texas, Hospice Austin was created in 1979 for the sole purpose of serving patients and families.
How We’re Different.
As a nonprofit hospice, our resources go back into services that benefit you and your family instead of being used to benefit owners or investors. It allows us to bring you and your family unique services, including:
1. Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, an inpatient facility combining home-like comfort with expert 24-hour medical care.
2. Full-time, experienced physicians who specialize in Hospice & Palliative Medicine.
3. Services for all stages of a serious illness, including palliative care, and hospice care.
4. Medications and medical equipment related to your illness supplied at no cost to you..
5. A dedicated on-call team ready to respond to your needs at any time of the night or weekend..
6. Pet Peace of Mind program to ensure your pet is able to remain with you throughout your illness.
7. More than 400 trained volunteers who offer companionship, respite and professional skills, such as hairstyling, massage and acupuncture.
8. Specialized care tailored to your specific needs, such as physical, occupational and speech therapies.
9. The most extensive bereavement program of any hospice in Central Texas with individual counseling, support groups, visits for the homebound and online support.
10. Camp Brave Heart, a free therapeutic summer camp for children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 who have lost a loved one
11. Fully accredited since 1998, Hospice Austin meets the highest standards of care and is evaluated on a regular basis by outside hospice experts.
Living with a Serious Illness?
We understand how difficult the decision can be to shift focus from cure to comfort. Hospice Austin’s mission is to ease the physical, emotional and spiritual pain of any person in our community facing the final months of a serious illness. That means no matter what your diagnosis – heart or lung disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer or any other illness with a life-expectancy of six months or less – you won’t have to face it alone.
Healthcare Professionals
Our goal is to support you in providing the best palliative care possible in whichever way works best for you and your patient:
>> Telephone consultations with you on pain management/palliative care.
>> Availability of our hospice physicians and staff while you remain your patient’s attending physician
>> Managing the care for your terminally ill patient.
Advance Care Planning – Give yourself and your loved ones the gift of making your wishes known.
What’s Your Plan?
Planning for the last chapter of life is a subject many of us would rather avoid. However, most people will become seriously ill or incapacitated at the end of their lives, and the default treatment often leads to intubation, catheterization, feeding tubes, and other invasive procedures. Some patients want every available technology; others do not. What’s important is that you decide for yourself what you want, speak with your loved ones, and write your wishes down.
Hospice Austin’s GIFT (Giving Instructions for Tomorrow) Project presents advance care planning sessions out in the community, both to the general public and to health care professionals. The sessions are free. Please click on The Gift Project box below to learn more about this program or to schedule a presentation.
