Our Story
The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by ESPN and legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano with one goal in mind: to achieve Victory Over Cancer®.
Since its formation in 1993, the V Foundation has awarded over $353 million in cancer research grants nationwide and has grown to become one of the premier supporters of cutting-edge cancer research. Due to generous donors, the Foundation has an endowment that covers administrative expenses. 100% of direct donations fund the best and the brightest scientists, from all backgrounds, who are researching all cancer types.
Our Story
Jim Valvano was a successful basketball coach, a national champion and became a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer in 2023. But as great a coach as he was, his legend was born from the human he was. Caring. Emotional. Funny. Passionate. Legendary. Jim Valvano turned his own cancer journey into a legacy that is saving lives decades after his passing.
While cancer ultimately took his life, Jim remained focused on helping others. In his last months, he teamed up with ESPN to form The V Foundation for Cancer Research. To date, the V Foundation has granted over $353 million to cancer research. As Jim said, “cancer research may not save my life, it may save my children’s lives. It may save someone you love.”
